About the Artist

Ernie Jones was born in Sumpter, South Carolina, and at age 3 moved to the suburbs of Washington D.C. He lived in Alexandria, Virginia, where he attended Mount Vernon High School. He began his art education in high school, and after graduation joined the United States Air Force. While serving in the Air Force, he studied art through the correspondence school, Famous Artists School of Westport Connecticut, which helped him attained the position of Squadron Illustrator and Draftsman. After the Air Force, he attended Northern Virginia Community College where he studied art under the guidance of Ms. Rhea Locke.   

Although he has done several commissioned paintings, Ernie’s current artistic focus is on Southern California. He enjoys painting interesting and historical sights up and down the coastline – a prime area for artistic interpretation.  “My favorite media are oils and acrylics, and I like using strong, rich colors in my work.” Ernie is a member of the Orange County Fine Arts Association. OCFA was founded in 1964 and currently has over 350 members, representing a diverse array of artists, art enthusiasts, collectors, students, philanthropists and more.

Ernie is a founding member and director of a new gallery located at Cress Street and Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, California.  You can see his art, along with 17 other artists, on display at the Artist Eye Laguna Gallery, 1294 S. “Although my formal training seems scant, I never stop learning from other artists, no matter what media or form. I even draw inspiration from watching art classes on public television. Since joining the Orange County Fine Arts Association, I feel my knowledge and understanding of art continues to grow through increased exposure to other fine artists with whom I share ideas and experiences.”
